Pollution in our ocean is threatening marine life in large proportions. Pollution comes in many forms such as plastic litter that we leave at the beach, chemical and oil spills, or polluted rivers and storm water that flows into the ocean. The following are steps we can take to stop pollution in the ocean.
1. Carry Few Plastic Products To The Beach
When visiting the beach, carry your water in a reusable bottle instead of a disposable one. Also pack food in reusable containers and carry your items in a cloth tote that you can recycle. In case you have disposable bottles and containers, do not dispose them at the beach; take them home with you and dispose them appropriately.
2. Take Part in Beach Clean-ups
If you are a regular surfer, diver or you simply enjoy relaxing at the beach, take the initiative of collecting other people’s litter. When you come across litter at the beach that could end up in the sea, dispose it in a trash can.
You can also join a local beach clean-up group, if you do not know where you can find one, fill this contact form and we will get back to you with more information.
3. Keep Drains Clean
Most of the water that goes down the drain ends up in the ocean. Therefore, ensure that you do not throw away rubbish on the streets as it could end up in the drains. Also, wash your cars away from the streets to avoid oil and other car wash flow getting into the drain.
4. Protect Local Streams
If there is a stream or a river in your neighborhood, ensure that rubbish does not get in. you can also organize your friends and plant trees and other plants to hold soil together near the river. This will prevent soil getting into the river which can also be transported into the sea.In summary, each one of us has a part to play in stopping pollution in the ocean.
